I have been reading through the book of James this past week.  It has always been my favorite book in the New Testament.  I enjoy studying the commentary notes and digging into the passages.  It is amazing what the true meaning of some scripture is compared to how we see it at first glance.  This is the passage I studied yesterday.  I have read it over and over.  There is so much here to soak in.  If you have a pulse you will be able to read this verse and apply it.  No one goes through life…or even a day without struggling with what comes out of their mouth.  The title, "Zip It!" is one of Titus' favorite things to say right now.  I'm sure he got that from me...it's a frequent term when I'm on the phone.  Pray for God to use this passage in your walk.  I was going to take a few verses out but this whole passage is too good so here it is.

James 3:2-10

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.  See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!  And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.  For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

I can just visualize a mouth with a bridle on it and how we need Christ to be the driver steering those reigns.  I guess truly letting Him be Lord of our lives would mean this was so.  This is an area that I have been working so hard on at home.  It is easy to say someone that I wish I wouldn’t have to Shan or the boys.  I am trying to think on good things and on His word.  I am spending so much more of my time with Jesus that He is helping me tremendously.  Though as this says, “no one can tame the tongue”, but we sure can be diligent about improving our speech.  I think it is very easy to say what is on our mind or be free with our words when we aren't checking them in with Jesus first.  How about you? What are some ways that you control you tongue?

I read an article once about a woman who struggled with her tongue. She committed to putting a piece of tape over her mouth for the whole week. She wrote in a journal about her discovery. I wish I could remember where I saw it. But even that idea is such a strong image. By slowing down the words that would have normally tumbled out she was able to think about them. I remember it helped her to identity why she said and responded the way she did. I know I desperately need to allow God to work in this part of my heart. If you’re game for a “taping” ceremony, let me know:)

I’ll need duct tape for me! 🙂 I love you my friend. I am so thankful for your friendship in my life. I’m sure Shan will help in the ceremony with my taping. 🙂

i’m intentionally trying to be slow to speak. i want to respond, not react.

i don’t necessarily have any tips; just chiming in that it’s something i’m focusing on too!

I am walking around mumbling…quick to hear..slow to speak…..I’ve said it so much to Noah this week. He’s a fast reactor…trying to get him to see it as well.

React..that’s HUGE Alece…it’s easy to react so fast and not to think first or consider how what you are saying will hurt someone.
